US imposes solar duties on China because of subsidies

The US has imposed duties on Chinese solar panel manufacturers after it said that they received unfair subsidies.
Chinese exporters into the US — including Suntech — will now face customs tariffs of between 2.9 percent and 4.73 percent, the Commerce Department said.

FINANCE Minister Tendai Biti has unveiled a debt resolution strategy that will unlock external financing for economic development.

The plan — Accelerated Arrears Clearance, Debt and Development Strategy — seeks ways to retire the country’s US$9,1 billion debt overhang.

President Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have since endorsed the strategy, which will also be presented to development partners.

FORMER Highfield legislator and University of Zimbabwe law lecturer Munyaradzi Gwisai and five accomplices were yesterday fined US$500 each and ordered to perform 420 hours of community service for conspiring to commit public violence.

The six were arrested during a meeting at which they were watching video footage of a mass uprising in Egypt and Tunisia last year in the city centre.
The prosecution had urged the court to impose the maximum sentence of 10 years.

However, magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini found a fine and community service appropriate, saying the penalty should not be outrageous but should send a message to would-be offenders.
