EDITORIAL COMMENT:Pre-planting producer price can boost maize production

Zimbabwe’s staple food, maize, has not been produced in enough quantities to meet demand in the past few agricultural seasons due to inadequate inputs, poor rainfall and other factors. The 2011/2012 agricultural season saw massive crop failure in many parts of the country and this has led to concerns that the country would be forced to import maize to cover the deficit. The country consumes about 1,8 million tonnes of maize in a year and up to 500 000 tonnes of maize imports was needed urgently to cover a deficit this year and avert hunger.
