Indigenous businesspeople accuse foreigners of fuelling rent hikes

Lloyd Gumbo and Obert Chifamba

They said the foreigner-induced rental madness is depriving them of economic empowerment opportunities.

The situation has forced economic empowerment groups to lobby Government to intervene and set rentals for urban shop space to levels that are affordable for indigenous Zimbabweans.
Although the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said it has a department that deals with such issues it had not been informed of the challenges locals were facing.
Indigenous business people want Government to enact laws that will regulate rentals.
