He used to sodomise me — murder suspect tells court

Court Reporter

A man accused of murdering an elderly man staying alone in Bulawayo’s Pumula North suburb and later burying the body in a shallow grave in the yard yesterday stunned the court when he claimed the old man had over the years sodomised him.

At his initial appearance yesterday, Daniel Sinkala told Bulawayo provincial magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja that each time the late William Longwe would have anal sex with him he would pay him $50.

He said events leading to the killing of the old man were that after having anal sex with him twice, Longwe told him that he did not have money to pay him.

It was then that he decided to kill him and sell his property so that he would get his $50.

Sinkala (24), of House Number 687 New Luveve, was not formally charged with murder as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

He was remanded in custody to 7 August and was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.

He had his warned and cautioned statements, which he made to the police after his arrest, confirmed meaning they can be used in a trial court as evidence.

Mr Masimba Saruwaka for the State told the court that on 13 July this year, Sinkala proceeded to House Number 6928 Pumula North where Longwe was staying alone.

FINANCE Minister Tendai Biti yesterday snubbed civil servants and denied them access to his offices to hand over a petition outlining their grievances.

The workers, led by the Apex Council leaders, however, managed to hand over the petition to Clerk of Parliament Mr Austin Zvoma at Parliament Building.
In their petition, the Government workers implored the legislators not to pass Minister Biti’s Mid-Term Policy statement.

Mr Zvoma received the petition on behalf of Senate President Mrs Edna Madzongwe and the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Lovemore Moyo.
Accepting the petition, Mr Zvoma said: “I accept the petition and I am going to hand it over to the respective persons as per your request.”

The workers are demanding an all-inclusive salary of US$564 for the least paid worker and 15 percent of the basic salary as rural allowance.
The least paid Government worker is getting US$296.

EU sanctions extension non-event

Tendai Mugabe Senior Reporter
Government has dismissed as a non-event the European Union extension of illegal sanctions by another year.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi told journalists in Harare yesterday that Government wanted the EU to unconditionally lift the embargo.

He said the EU does not have the mandate to supervise implementation of the Global Political Agreement as a precondition to lift the sanctions.

Political commentators also weighed in condemning the extension, saying it was a violation of Zimbabwe’s sovereignty.

However, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was yesterday singing from a different hymn book from his colleagues in Government and welcoming the EU announcement.

Minister Mumbengegwi said the GPA was an internal document that has nothing to do with the EU.
