A GUNMAN fired two shots at Harare municipal police officers who were demolishing illegal car sales structures along Robert Mugabe Road in Eastlea, Harare, on Sunday.
Eight officers sustained head injuries and fractured limbs, while some lost varying amounts of cash when the gunman and his team, which included a woman who was only identified as Mrs Midzi, used force to stop the demolition.
Council has since filed a police report, CR number 73/8/12, at Rhodesville Police Station.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector James Sabau yesterday confirmed that two shots were fired during the skirmishes.
“According to the reports made, there were two shots fired, but the firearm was not pointed at anyone. We are still investigating who fired these shots. We cannot implicate anyone in the meantime,” he said.
Sources said missiles were thrown at the municipal security officers.

Census must be transparent, says President
Farirai Machivenyika Senior Reporter
THE Zimbabwe Statistical Agency must carry out the 2012 population census transparently to erase any doubt of the outcome, the President has said.
President Mugabe, who is the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe
Defence Forces, said this at the official launch of the 2012 Population Census in Harare yesterday.
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputies Professor Arthur Mutambara and Ms Thokozani Khupe attended the launch.
The census will start from midnight tomorrow up to August 27.
“All persons who will spend the census night in Zimbabwe must be counted,” said President Mugabe.
“Thus, the catchphrase for the census is ‘be sure to be counted’. My family and I will be counted and we must be sincerely counted and we also want sincere figures.
“There are some countries in Africa in which censuses are impossible to do because of ethnic differences or regional differences.
“You will find midway through the process, boxes disappear, disappear like they do on elections because one will say our region or province would be considered smaller or our ethnic group would be considered smaller.
