Mpilo faces lawsuit over ‘negligent surgical operation’

Leonard Ncube
A 16-year-old girl is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo following an alleged negligent surgical operation by doctors who reportedly left a pair of scissors inside her womb.

The girl (name withheld) had to undergo two operations within a week as the doctors had allegedly left a pair of scissors in her womb when she delivered through Caesarean section on 4 October.

The second operation was done on 9 October and since then the wound, measuring roughly 20cm, is still open and is now discharging pus.

While hospital authorities said the second operation was necessitated by the growth of an abscess in the womb, the girl insists that she felt prickling-like pains soon after the first operation and reported to the hospital staff, who said she “should stop eating” solids for six days.
