Mine’s bid to evade indigenisation law exposed
Chronicle Correspondent
Canadian owned mine, Duration Gold Zimbabwe’s bid to evade the indigenisation law has been exposed and it has emerged the mining company is transferring its assets to a separate company.
According to a letter addressed to some of Duration Gold employees by its director Mr Andrew Thompson, the company is in the process of separating operational project from services.
Sources within the company said workers were given forms to endorse the company name change and asset transfer.
“The workers, however, refused to sign, as they were suspicious of the intentions of management,” said the source.
The Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act requires that at least 51 percent ownership in any business must be in the hands of indigenous Zimbabweans, while foreign or non-indigenous ownership must be limited to a maximum of 49 percent.
The sources said the company was trying to evade surrendering the 51 percent.
