Mzingwane River polluted
Chronicle Reporter
A monumental environmental and humanitarian disaster looms in Matabeleland South where the main source of water, Mzingwane River, has been heavily polluted by uncontrolled mining activities.
Several irrigation schemes in the arid province have shut down due to siltation of the river and major dams like Zhobe and Silalabuhwa are under threat, as dangerous chemicals used in mining are flowing into the dams
The river supplies major towns like Beitbridge, West Nicholson and Colleen Bawn with water while a majority of livestock farmers in the province depend on it.
During a tour of parts of the river in Esigodini yesterday, the Environmental Management (EMA) board was shown gaping tunnels and craters, some up to 20 metres deep, along the riverbed.
The Board immediately called for stakeholders, especially the local communities to unite and stop companies or individual intending to mine along the river without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.
A Chinese company, Tapin Private Limited is accused of causing most of the damage, in the two years that it has been mining gold along the river.Malian troops patrol key town of Diabaly
