Motoring with Lovert Mafukure

The Motor Racing calendar for 2017 is finally out. The Bulawayo Motoring Club (BMC) has confirmed the dates, which however, are subject to change with likely additions of some fun events. We cannot wait to partake in all the goodness lined up by the BMC. The long wait is over and in a few weeks’ time the action will begin.

March 25 marks the beginning of the season with the Nationals and the venue is none other than the Bulawayo Motorsport Park. Local and Harare competitors are expected to put up a good show this march.

New drivers are welcome provided they have attended at least two driver’s training days. These are training sessions by seasoned drivers. A medical would also be required to be able to take out a day’s licence in order to compete. New drivers are encouraged to start out in the Ultimate street car class. Street cars are just ordinary street cars with the standard seat belts.

The driver must have a Helmet and long sleeves and trousers and closed shoes for their safety.

Following the Nationals is the Africa Day Public Drags on May 25. Motor-heads out there will get yet another chance to feel the track and settle their grievances on the tarmac like men. The BMC continues with its Race Legal campaign as it encourages people to race legally in controlled environments. Street racing is not only dangerous to the drivers but to the other road users as well, so keep it safe — bring that adrenalin to the track as this day has been set aside just for you.

The idea is to bring all the street racers to a controlled environment where they can race legally and safely. Now to spice things up, car crews out there will be encouraged to come and battle it out and see which crew has the fastest cars and the fastest drivers. Winning always takes a combination of the two and not one. There are fast cars and fast drivers then fast cars and slow drivers. A combination of both fast cars and fast drivers is the real deal. Remember it’s never about the car alone but the driver too, the skill and the precision.

Winning is nice but that’s not all racing is about, it’s also about the experience and surpassing your own previous records and eventually becoming a better driver on public roads. Racing takes a lot of skill that cannot be attained overnight, gradually make it a culture and who knows where it can get you? Last year was the beginning of something great, drivers will come back with sharper skills, better times and faster cars . . . hopefully.

On the 3rd of June we will have the Nationals again followed by another public drags event on the 29th of July. 26 August and the 30th of September the show goes on with the Nationals bringing us to the Spin fest on October 28th. All the spin masters will come down from all over the country for this event so do take note of the dates.

All unsettled matters have one last chance at the public drags to be held on the 4th of November, this will be the last drag event of the year before The 3-hour endurance race that marks the end of the season on December 9.

All the big boys come out to play at this event. Make a date, it’s always a show not to miss.

As usual your $5 will get you in and its free if we have reason to believe you are under the age of 12. BMC members have free access to all the events throughout the year. Full bar and catering always available at all events but remember — do not drink and drive. Keep the differentials locked, keep it safe, keep the dates and see you there.
