2025 AFCON: THE BALL IS IN OUR COURT

THE Warriors are back in action this week in their quest to qualify for the 2025 AFCON finals.

All that we need to do is to at least get a point from our game against Kenya in Polokwane.

A point against the Harambee Stars would be enough to take us to the Nations Cup finals in Morocco next year.

A victory will provide us with the perfect story to our qualifying campaign in a group which also features Cameroon and Namibia.

When the draw was made, the analysts were united in saying this was a tricky and tough group.
The expectation was that Cameroon would win the group, which is likely to be the outcome, but as to who was going to accompany them was not known.

For us the tricky part was that we had not done well when it comes to battles against Kenya and we had only won once, in the CECAFA Cup final at Rufaro in 1985, against the Kenyans.

The Harambee Stars had beaten us in our two recent meetings in Malawi and South Africa.
We had also struggled against Namibia’s Brave Warriors.

But, we showed that we have come of age, when it comes to the Nations Cup, by beating the Namibians in back-to-back battles in Johannesburg.

We also held the Kenyans to a draw in Rwanda while we also restricted Cameroon to a draw.

This has left us needing, at least, a point against Kenya for us to book our place in Morocco.

After struggling to qualify for the AFCON finals in the first two decades of our I

ndependence, we have found the formula to do so on a regular basis.

We qualified for the three consecutive AFCON finals and it’s likely that we would have made it four in a row if we had not been suspended by FIFA for what they claimed to be third party interference in the administration of ZIFA when the board was fired by the Sports Commission.

Now, we are back in the trenches and our boys have been doing fine in flying out flag very high.
We have to put into context that we have not played a game at home in these qualifiers but the same can also be said about Kenya and Namibia themselves.

What this means is that Cameroon are the only ones who have been enjoying the comforts that come with playing a football match at home.

This is an area which we feel the authorities should address with the urgency it requires.
We want this to be the final window of international matches in which we will be playing away from home.

Come March next year, we expect our team to be playing at home and enjoying the warm support of its fans.

We love our football and we love our Warriors.

We urge them to remain professional and not to play for a point but go into this game demanding a victory.(Hmetro)
