winners are set to compete in a provincial competition in August in Marondera, while the provincial winners will get a ticket to compete at the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe.
Hazvinei Murasiranwa (19) emerged the winner after holding off stiff competition from the tall Portia Murambiro (18), who came second. and Natasha Mushonga (17), who was crowned the second princess.
There was also a competition for boys in which Tendai Gambiza (20) was the winner after beating the dreadlocked Tafadzwa Kwangwai (23) and Hansen Hombarume (19) into second and third place respectively. The competition was organised by the Zanu-PF Marondera district youth committee who – as it appeared – failed to anticipate the overwhelming response from a youthful audience hungry for entertainment.
The organisers settled for the small Marondera Country Club Hall that was packed to the rafters with scores of youths failing to gain entrance. The sound system was also not up to standard for the occasion that is set to rival the Miss Tourism Marondera in future.
Guest of honour at the pageant Marondera/Hwedza Senator Sydney Sekeramayi called for discipline among the youths.
“Discipline is lacking among the youths of today and it is of paramount importance because you are the future leaders. What future can we expect from youths that are always drunk with ZED (a potent illicit brew) and always high on drugs?” he said.
Cde Sekeramayi said the youths were the pivot and vanguard of the ruling party and they could help reclaim the constituency.
Murewa Senator Cde Tendai Bright Makunde, who said the pageant had opened a new chapter among the youths in the province, also graced the occasion.
“We hail that this pageant will cascade down to all districts and remote areas, bringing the much-needed competition to the provincial finals,” said Sen Makunde.
Observers at the event said the organisers of the pageant should spruce up their act in future as it has proved to be very popular on the entertainment calendar in Marondera.
After the all-night event, delayed 21st February Movement celebrations continued throughout the next day at the same venue.
