LONG-distance runner, Isaac Mpofu, is presently sidelined due to a hip injury which forced him to withdraw from the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) track and field championships held at White City Stadium in Bulawayo at the weekend.

The injury, which occurred just before the competition, has momentarily interrupted Mpofu’s dream for World Championships qualification.
However, the athlete remains resilient and is fully committed to his recovery and future goals.

In an interview with Zimpapers Sports Hub, Mpofu shared his concern about the injury.
“I have problems with my hip. I was meant to take part in today’s event but unfortunately, I have an injury. It’s a setback that I need to address carefully. If I don’t recover in time I may miss out on some of the World Championships qualifiers but I hope I will recover soon,” said Mpofu.

While doctors are still determining the exact nature of the injury, the athlete is optimistic about regaining full strength soon.
Despite this temporary setback, Mpofu is already looking to the future with a clear vision.

The 33-year-old marathoner, who made his Olympic debut last year, is setting his sights on the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21.

“The World Athletics Championships are my next major target. I know it’s going to be tough, but I’m determined. For the second year running, Mpofu was crowned the Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) Athlete of the Year in 2024. It was a remarkable year, participating in the 2024 Olympics where he finished in position 19.

He also brought home a bronze medal from the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Mpofu finished third in a time of 1 hour 05 minutes 58 seconds.

Meanwhile, Naaz has opened entries for the National Junior Championships set to take place on April 12 at White City Stadium.
The event promises to be an exciting day of athletic competition, featuring a wide range of track and field events that will see the best young talent in the country competing for glory.

Among the events on offer are the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 3 000m, and 5 000m races as well as hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, javelin and discus.
In addition to the Naaz Junior Championships, another major event making a comeback this year is the Bulawayo Marathon.

The marathon was one of Zimbabwe’s premier running events and was known for its scenic course through Bulawayo’s western suburbs thereby attracting both local and international athletes.

Registration for the Baldmin Bulawayo Marathon opened on January 15, 2025, and will close on April 15.
The race numbers for participants can be collected from April 16 to 18 at White City Stadium.

Registered athletes will receive confirmation of their race number via email or SMS, so it’s crucial that contact details are accurate. Athletes will need to present proof of identification and their race confirmation when collecting their race pack.

Those collecting on behalf of an athlete must also provide proof of identity.
The Baldmin Bulawayo Marathon includes the 21km, 10km and 5km.

This event aims to inspire individuals to live healthy lives, foster community camaraderie and support local causes. It promises to be a thrilling day for participants and spectators alike.
