TWENTY-FOUR more bodies have been recovered from Lake Kariba after they were found trapped beneath the ferry that capsized on Tuesday.
The bodies were retrieved this morning by members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the Zimbabwe Republic Police sub-aqua units during ongoing search and recovery operations, the Joint Operations Command said.
The latest recovery brings the number of bodies retrieved from the disaster to 37, based on the 13 bodies previously confirmed by the police.
Search and recovery efforts are continuing as authorities work to establish the full extent of the disaster.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said earlier that 13 bodies had been retrieved and 67 victims rescued and taken to Mahombe-kombe Primary School Command Centre for medical attention and further management.
Police said they were still verifying the exact number of people who were aboard the boat.
The police said the vessel had a confirmed carrying capacity of 90 passengers, excluding five crew members, but investigations indicated that it could have been carrying more people.
Initial information provided to the lake captain indicated that 120 people — 108 adults and 12 children — were travelling from Kariba to Chalala.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the search and recovery operation continues.
