TWENTY teams from the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ), will battle it out in the RCZ Varume Bhora tournament to be played at Mucheke Stadium this weekend. The four-year-old Nyaningwe Supermarket sponsored tournament received a major boost this year after sponsors increased their support by $5,000 to make it $15,000 this year.
Teams were placed in four groups of five for the preliminaries. The draw was held in Harare last week.
Pool A constitutes of defending champions Zimuto, Masvingo, Betere, Pamushana and Nkulumane.
Group B has the sponsors’ team Nyaningwe, Hatcliffe, Murambwi, Glenview and Chivhu.
Pool C has a guest team from South Africa who will play Seke, Mkoba, Zunga and Mbizo from Kwekwe.
The last group seems to be the most competitive and has Rujeko, Nyika, Mufakose, Chiredzi and Uzhe.
Each group will have the top two teams progressing to the quarter-finals with four squaring up in the semis.
Tournament co-ordinator, David Masomere said all was in place for the fourth edition of the tournament which has become an annual feature on the RCZ sports calendar.
Masomere thanked the Mapuvire family who own Nyaningwe retail shops for promoting sport evangelism for the past four years.
“All is set for the fourth edition of the RCZ Varume Bhora Tournament.
“We want to thank the Mapuvire family for continuously supporting sport evangelism by availing funds to us.
“Last year the sponsorship package was $10,000 and now its $15,000 which shows how the Mapuvire family is committed to the growth of the tournament,” said Masomere.
The tournament saw 80 teams fighting to earn a place to participate in the tournament in the last 20 month.
This year’s winners will walk away with $3,000, a trophy, medals and a full team set of uniforms.
Runners up will receive $1,500 and medals while third and fourth place will receive $900 and $600 respectively.
