adminImmigration officials attributed the increased traffic to the exercise that saw many Zimbabwean immigrants regularise their stay in South Africa making it easier for them to cross the border legally. Figures from the Department of Immigration indicate that 35 077 people entered the country between 25 and 27 December compared to 9 725 during the same period last year.
A further 16 524 left the country this year during the same period, while 8 497 left the country in 2010. Around 17 500 illegal immigrants also entered the country through the same border after paying fines for breaching a section of the Immigration Act. The volume of vehicular traffic also increased with an average of 200 light cars entering into the country per day. Last year, around 4 200 cars entered the country between 25 and 27 December, while this year between 4 500 and 4 700 cars came in during the same period.
Two thirds of these cars were foreign registered, constituting around 2 500 light vehicles per day. The Assistant Regional Immigration Officer in charge of Southern region, Mr Charles Gwede said they were ready to deal with the high volume of both human and vehicular traffic.
