THREE brothers from Kwekwe died on Christmas Day after they drowned while swimming in White-Waters Dam at Escape Resort in Gweru where they had gone for holiday celebrations with their family. The tragic incident occurred at around 3.10pm when the three brothers Anesu (19), Randal (19) and Kudzai (17) Mudondo of Plot 13 in Kwekwe drowned while their hapless parents watched.
It has also emerged that there were no life-savers at the resort which offers boat riding and cruising facilities. The owner of the resort and Gweru business tycoon Mr Enos Size said he was not responsible for the dam although he offers such services.
“Accidents happen. I am not the owner of the dam. There are signposts at the entrance and other points that one can swim at their own risk,” he said.
The brothers’ father Mr Darlington Mudondo confirmed the incident which occurred while he was roasting meat for his family at the resort. A distraught Mr Mudondo narrated the ordeal to Sunday News.
He said on the fateful day he drove from Kwekwe with his family and went to White-Waters to spend the Christmas holiday at the resort.
“What happened is that we went to White-Waters Escape Resort as a family for Christmas and our children started swimming while we were roasting meat. At around 3.10pm the three children drowned and we sought help from the owners but to no avail. We then contacted the Bulawayo sub-aqua unit but unfortunately they had gone to Nembudziya in Gokwe to attend another scene where a man is alleged to have drowned in Sanyathi Dam. The sub-aqua unit later arrived at around 9pm and conducted the search. The children were found the following morning at around 10am. We feel that the lives of our children could have been saved if there were life-savers at White-Waters,” he said.
When Sunday News got to the scene other holiday makers were going about their business as usual while the Mudondo family was looking for help.
