POLICE have arrested three men suspected to be part of a gang that has been terrorising motorists in Bulawayo. Sources said one of the suspects is also linked to a sex attack on a woman in Cowdray Park. Mqondisi Sibanda, who was last week attacked and left for dead by the thugs, managed to positively identify two of the suspects yesterday.
The gang allegedly attacked Sibanda and stole nearly $600 from him.
They are also suspected to be part of a gang that pounced on six motorists travelling along the Nyamandlovu-Cowdray Park Road within space of a week.
Sibanda said police informed him of the arrest yesterday morning and called him so that he could identify the suspects.
The Chronicle yesterday visited Luveve Police Station for the identification parade and spoke to Sibanda.
“I positively identified two of the guys. One of them has a missing tooth. He was the one driving my car after they abducted me. So it was easy for me to identify them. I, however, don’t know the third person with dreadlocks,” said Sibanda.
He said among the people who attended the identification parade was a woman who was allegedly raped by one of the suspects.
“A woman who was raped also identified one of them as her attacker. It seems this is a big syndicate because we heard that they were working with prostitutes who would lure men to their lodgings, trapping their unsuspecting victims,” he said.
Sibanda was left for dead by the suspects who abducted him for over three hours.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said the suspects were in custody assisting them with investigations.
“Investigations are still going on. We’ve picked up some suspects who are helping us with our investigations. However, I can’t comment any further as this might jeopardise the investigations,” said Insp Simango.
She commended members of the public for working closely with the police to fight crime.
Insp Simango said the public should continue providing police with information that would help them solve the matter conclusively.
