A 33-year-old Filabusi man has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting two infant sisters aged three years and seven months.
The sentence was handed down by the Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court, which convicted the man on two counts of sexually assaulting the young children.
The court sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on each count, with the sentences running concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year jail term.
According to court proceedings, the disturbing incident occurred on February 24, 2026, at around 11am in the Chief Maduna area of Filabusi.
The children’s mother had left the three-year-old girl and her seven-month-old baby sister at their homestead while she went to work in nearby fields.
While working, she heard one of the children crying and returned home to investigate. Upon arrival, she discovered that the children’s clothing had been tampered with and found the accused at the scene with his clothes completely disarranged.
Further observations revealed signs that the children had been sexually assaulted.
The matter was immediately reported to the police, and the victims were referred to Filabusi District Hospital for medical examination.
The conviction has been welcomed as a strong message against crimes targeting children, with the justice system maintaining a firm stance against sexual abuse and exploitation of minors.
Authorities have reiterated calls for communities to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to ensure offenders are brought to justice and vulnerable children are protected.
