A 13-year-old girl staying with an ever travelling aunt was raped by her 35-year-old uncle countless times before her 16-year-old brother only to have her aunt assault and threaten her not to tell anyone about the sexual assault.

However, nothing stays hidden forever as this all came to light when the uncle from Inyathi was arrested for allegedly raping her since 2014 when she was eight.

“My uncle had a tendency of coming home drunk and would come to the kitchen where I was sleeping with my brother (who was 10 at the time) and rape me. When my brother would wake up, he (uncle) would quickly run away from the hut,” stated the minor.

The aggravated sexual assault to the young girl continued for years before the minor finally decided to confide to her aunt, the accused’s wife.

But it was to no avail. It made it worse.

“She assaulted me and said I must not tell anyone because I was lying,” stated the minor.

The raping thus continued unabated.

Meanwhile, sometime in October 2019, the minor moved to another village to stay with another aunt who discovered a strange discharge from the minor’s underwear leading to an inquisitive interrogation from her.

It was then that the minor reportedly narrated to her aunt how her uncle had allegedly raped her over the past years.

“I asked her why she didn’t tell anyone but she said she told the accused’s wife who assaulted and threatened her not to tell anyone,” stated the aunt.

The aunt notified her husband who went on to look for the accused to ask what had happened but he did not find him. A report against the uncle was made at Inyathi Police Station.

Bulawayo magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu, presiding over the case at Tredgold Magistrates Courts, remanded the alleged rapist for trial on 20 January 2019.
