36 beasts for Chivi independence festivities

CHIVI district received a boost for its 35th independence celebrations after Zanu-PF provincial secretary for finance Cde Killer Zivhu donated 36 beasts to be slaughtered at various centres across the district. Speaking at the handover ceremony of $12 400 to purchase the beasts in Chivi over the weekend, Cde Zivhu, who is also the Chivi Rural District Council chairman, said each of the 32 wards in the district will get a beast to feed people during the celebrations.

The remaining four beasts will be slaughtered at Chivi Growth Point where the major celebrations will take place.

Cde Zivhu said this year’s independence celebrations are special as they came at a time Zimbabwe has been honoured through President Mugabe’s elevation to the chairpersonship of the African Union and sadc.

“We want to join the rest of the nation in commemorating our achievements as a country in fields such as education, health, indigenisation and economic empowerment,” he said.

Meanwhile, resettled farmers said they will celebrate this year’s independence in style as they now have the land.

Goromonzi farmer Mrs Hope Kunaka of Svisva Farm said her life had improved significantly as a result of the liberation struggle which brought the land.

“It is because of the people who fought for our independence that we now produce food freely without any disturbances,” she said.

Another farmer Mrs Maonedzo Nyamakura said she was now producing crops that used to be considered elite.

Glendale farmer Mrs Tsitsi Gezi said they were happy because land was the main grievance for the liberation struggle.

In Masvingo, Mr Jerry Rugumi of Sisk suburb said the nation should value the country’s independence, especially with the empowerment of people taking place.

“Zimbabwe is an inspiration to many African countries because the zanu-pf Government went a step further to give people economic independence,’’ he said.

Masvingo war veterans provincial chairman Cde Charles Muchena said the celebrations were special because Zimbabwe has defeated imperialism.

zanu-pf Masvingo provincial chairman Cde Paradzai Chakona said all Zimbabweans should celebrate independence irrespective of political persuasion.
