Johannesburg – Four men were arrested following a shootout with police near OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said officers had been patrolling the R24 and R21 when they noticed a suspicious vehicle.

“When the members attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants fired on them.

“The members returned fire and disabled the vehicle, causing it to come to a halt on the R21 North, outside the airport, just before the Atlas Road off-ramp.”

Mogale said four men were arrested and three unlicensed firearms were recovered.

Mogale said the arrests were part of operations to foil “follow-home robberies” near the airport.

“The team’s integrated effort and commitment in arresting the suspects is highly commended. The prevention and investigation of crime in and around the airport remains a priority.” — News24.
