TRAGEDY struck at high speed along the Gweru-Zvishavane Road when a Toyota Ragius ACE omnibus veered out of control and overturned, killing four people and injuring seven others in a horrific crash.
The fatal accident occurred at the 20km peg around 08:30AM on 17 April, after the vehicle’s right rear tyre burst, causing it to somersault before landing back on its wheels in a twisted wreck.
Screams and chaos filled the air as survivors crawled from the crumpled vehicle, while good Samaritans rushed to help.
“The sound of that tyre bursting was like a gunshot… then the screams followed,” said one witness who arrived moments after the crash.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured remain under treatment at the same hospital.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has since confirmed the incident and urged public transport operators to regularly service their vehicles to avoid further loss of life on the roads.
