police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said three people died on the spot while the fourth died on admission to hospital.
He said preliminary investigations showed the driver of the bus, which was travelling to Dzivarasekwa, tried to overtake another Lefombo bus while there was an on-coming commuter omnibus.
“The accident occurred at around 8:40 am today (yesterday). Just after 100 metres from Sanganai Inn, the Lefombo driver tried to overtake one of their company buses but there was a close on-coming Toyota Hiace, which was travelling to town,” he said.
Ass Insp Chakanza said to avoid a head on collision, the driver of the commuter omnibus swerved to his left side.
“This resulted in the bus and the commuter omnibus side swiping,” he said.
He said both drivers escaped unhurt.
Asst Insp Chakanza said drivers of public transport should always exercise caution to avoid loss of human life.
“There is no need to exceed speed limits especially when approaching residential areas like in this case,” he said.
“This just shows recklessness on the part of the drivers because the two buses belong to the same company. The drivers should also put in mind the state of our roads, which are in bad condition,” he said.
