THE vision to provide safe drinking water to thousands of people in rural Makoni West constituency is fast being realised following the sinking of 40 high-yielding boreholes.
The boreholes were drilled by the constituency’s Member of National Assembly, Dr Jenfan Muswere and his Muswere Foundation.
Dr Muswere is also the Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister.
The boreholes have rescued schools, clinics, business centres and general villagers.
At least 20 schools in the constituency have also been assisted with computers.
Dr Muswere said the intervention follows the realisation that poor water quality was the major cause of disease outbreaks in the constituency.
“So far we have drilled 40 boreholes using our own funds – mainly at schools and clinics – to provide adequate quantities of safe drinking water. These are high-yielding boreholes. Some are as deep as 120 metres to foster reliable access to water for communities,” said Dr Muswere.
He said the foundation deployed a team with high knowledge regarding the hydro-ecological condition to site the boreholes and the quality of workmanship was commendable.
Before the latest intervention, villagers would walk long distances to fetch unsafe water from streams and shallow wells.
During times of low rainfall, the streams would dry.
