districts. Speaking at the official opening of the project in Harare yesterday, the EU first secretary, Mr Emilio Rossem, said they have injected US$1,1 million to local authorities for the promotion of peace and good local governance programmes.
“In addition to supporting rural district councils we will support seven other urban councils in another similar project with the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe. The EU is putting euro 800 000 (US$1,1 million) into the projects. The Global Political Agreement provides a framework on national healing and conflict prevention, which this project is in line with,” he said.
Mr Rossem added that the project was aimed at complementing efforts made so far in peace building by capacitating traditional leaders and other civic leaders to internalise peace.
Officially launching the project, Zimbabwe Local Governance President Mr Nimrod Chiminya, commended the EU for supporting the ground breaking project.
“The future of RDCs rest with peace and good governance, where there is no peace there is no development and there will be no jobs. This launch is of paramount importance to local authorities for sustainable development.
“It will foster communication between council and ratepayers, enhance accountability and separate political and civic affairs,” he said.
