The newly launched Zanu PF Heritage Group Trust has exhumed and reburied 44 liberation war heroes in Manicaland.

The programme aims to assist war veterans, their children, and the youth through various projects.

Cde Shadreck Chikwanda, the national chief research officer for the Trust, confirmed the development.

“This year, we intend to rebury fallen heroes who have not been given decent burials. There is an estimated figure of around 33 000 fallen heroes who are yet to be reburied years after independence,” he noted.

The Trust plans to visit Mozambique to exhume and rebury more liberation heroes who died during the struggle, but did not receive proper burials.

They aim to repatriate over 200 fallen heroes from Chimoio this year, having already begun mobilising funds and resources.

“We are calling for various stakeholders to assist us towards this cause, and we are looking forward to procuring hearses and all-terrain vehicles for the logistics required to carry out these reburials,” Cde Chikwanda added.

The Manicaland Provincial Heroes Acre has been identified as the distribution point for the fallen heroes who will be brought back from Mozambique before being taken to their respective provinces for reburial.

The Heritage Group Trust was established to support veterans of the liberation struggle, their children, and the youth. Officially launched at the Zanu PF Headquarters in 2024, the Trust aims to ensure that the welfare of both fallen and living comrades is well catered for.

Additionally, the Trust seeks to safeguard the country’s legacy and history, promote Zimbabwean culture and tradition, and foster patriotism among citizens.
