A Masvingo man has been jailed five years for possessing 46 kilogrammes of dagga.

Chipinge magistrate Mr Farai Gwitima convicted Johane Masase (58) of house number 59, Old Railways, Mucheke in Masvingo, on his own plea of guilty.

Prosecutor Mr Witness Nyamundaya told the court that on December 15, 2017, at around 12.05pm, Masase, who was driving a Nissan Champ pick-up (registration ADL 9549), was stopped by police who, together with members of the Zimbabwe National Army were manning a roadblock at 121-kilometre peg along the Mutare-Masvingo Highway.

Masase tried to flee, but stopped after realising that the roadblock was policed by heavily armed security personnel.

After searching the vehicle, police discovered five sacks stashed with dagga.
