THE Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, has expressed concern over the disregard of lockdown measures by people continuing to gather around shopping centres and residential areas.
Giving an update on the Covid-19 security situation in the country on Thursday, the Minister said he was equally disturbed by reports of people throwing house parties, operating shebeens and drinking beer in groups whilst closing themselves inside bars and bottle stores.
“This poses a serious risk to the individuals concerned and the generality of the public. It militates against Government efforts to manage the pandemic and, therefore, there is a requirement that people desist from such tendencies,” said Minister Kazembe.
He revealed that 15 545 people have been arrested throughout the country for various offences related to violation of lockdown regulations.
“Besides the arrests, security agents are conducting awareness campaigns in all parts of the country to conscientise the people on the need to comply with Covid–19 safety measures.
“May I implore those providing essential services to continue to do so without contravening the law. Let us take note that the movement restrictions under the Covid–19 lockdown are meant to ensure that Zimbabweans are safe, healthy and protected from the coronavirus disease.”
Minister Kazembe said he has directed the Commissioner General of Police to ensure that security officers on deployment observe the tenets of human rights and tighten security at isolation centres. He also noted that the lockdown period has been generally peaceful.
