A TOTAL of 823 athletes have so far registered for the Econet Victoria Falls marathon with just over a week before the race. The marathon takes place in the resort town of Victoria Falls on June 28. According to Isabel Botha of Wild Frontiers, a touring company tasked with the marathon’s registration exercise, more athletes are expected to register in the days leading up to the event.
The registration shows that 96 athletes registered online for the full marathon while 15 did so via fax. Of the 96 registrations, 36 are locals while the rest are Zambians and a Motswana resident in Zimbabwe.
A total of 280 have so far registered for the half marathon with 137 being Zimbabweans.
“A lot of entries are done in Victoria Falls, so we have not yet finalised by a long shot. I’m not sure about any big names yet,” said Botha.
The marathon has been dominated by Blanket Mine athlete, Nkosiyazi Sibanda, who has won consecutive titles since 2012. Sibanda last month told Chronicle Sport that he hoped to defend his title.
Winners of the full marathon, both men and women, will walk away with $900 while half marathon winners are set to get $500.
