The senior citizen had been incensed after his victims reportedly left him from a list of beneficiaries of the government’s Food For Work programme.
Malinga Ndlovu of Samulodi village was in custody assisting with investigations, while his victims were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital and mortuary respectively.
Police spokesman for Matabeleland South province, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, confirmed the incident yesterday.
He identified the deceased as Khayibulali Dube (74), while the axed man, Shadreck Dube was said to be in a stable condition.
Insp Dzirutwe said the incident occurred last Friday afternoon when the victims and the accused and other villagers were fencing one Roger Chikomo’s homestead.
“During the process, Ndlovu accused Shadreck Dube of omitting his name on the beneficiaries of the food assistance programme.
“An argument then ensued between the two. As a result, the accused picked up an axe and struck the victim once on the left shoulder.
“He was, however, restrained by other villagers and after which he went to his homestead.
“Later in the day, Ndlovu armed himself with a 12 bore shotgun. He then went and waylaid Dube along a footpath leading to his homestead.
“The suspect was then spotted by the now deceased Khayibulali Dube who in turn confronted him and acted as a peacemaker.
“This, however, did not go down well with him.
“He then shot Khayibulali once under the left armpit and he collapsed.
“Both Shadreck and deceased were rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, but Khayibulali died on the way.
“The matter was reported to police and we have since charged Ndlovu with murder and aggravated assault.
“The shot gun and two rounds of ammunition and the spent cartridge were recovered from scene,” he said.
