NINE men allegedly assaulted Surface Investments head of the human resources department in Chitungwiza over the renewal of their contracts and payment plan.Raymond Banda (35) Raymond Makota (37), Francis Jenje (34), Edwin Chin’ai (29), Steward Doyina (28), Trust Chimbadzo (27), Johannes Mulauzi (24), Mhondiwa Chikondo (24) and Betserai Tirivanhu (29), all of Chitungwiza, were not asked to plead to assault charges.
Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini remanded them out of custody to September 17 for trial. The incident occurred on September 5 when Olice Chuma (32) employed as the head of human resources at Surface Investments in Chitungwiza was called to quell the rowdy contractors at the premises.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa alleges that the nine had been called to renew their contract after the previous one had lapsed at the end of August. The court heard that the nine refused to sign for the renewal of the contracts and demanded to be paid their dues.
This led to a heated argument after Chuma advised them that he would discuss the issue with the company’s payroll salary clerk. Trouble started when Chuma returned and informed the team that they would be paid for the hours worked and some terminal dues.
It is also alleged that this worsened the situation with the disgruntled workers demanding to be paid according to the previous contract.
The team allegedly became violent and started assaulting Chuma leading to Jeremiah Mago intervening to restrain them.
Mr Ndambakuwa further alleged that Tirivanhu punched Mago on the collar bone during the scuffle. After the assault, the team left the scene and the matter was reported to the police leading to their arrest.
