The 9th edition of the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Journalistic Awards has commenced, with emphasis on the critical role played by the media in promoting road safety and curbing traffic-related fatalities.

Speaking at the launch of the awards, Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, Mr Cosmas Chiringa said journalism is key in safeguarding lives through accurate and impactful reporting.

“Journalism is not just a profession but a beacon of truth,” he said.

“Road safety is a matter of life and death. It is everyone’s responsibility.”

The awards, aimed at recognising outstanding journalists in road safety reporting, come at a time when Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to reduce road accidents and improve public awareness.

TSCZ board chairperson, Bishop Kura Sibanda said responsible journalism is a powerful tool in promoting road safety.

“Road safety reporting educates the public,” he said.

“We warn the public against taking pictures at accident scenes.”

The event brought together journalists, road safety stakeholders and Government officials to deliberate on strategies for enhancing media participation in traffic safety awareness.

The TSCZ Journalistic Awards serve as a platform to honour and motivate journalists who contribute to the national road safety discourse.
