Senegal’s Syra Sylla is one of six women globally to be recognised by the International Olympic Committee for her outstanding dedication to promoting gender equality and diversity in the sports world this Women’s Month.
A former sports journalist and gender equality advocate, Syra is known for her efforts to empower women through sports, especially basketball.
She founded Dakar Hoops (Senegal) and Ladies & Basketball (Paris), organisations that use basketball as a socio-educational tool to help young girls and women unlock their full potential.
Her work has had a significant impact on increasing the representation of women in sports and inspiring many young girls to get involved in athletics.
Syra is regularly invited to speak at panels and institutions where she shares her experiences and serves as a role model for young girls, particularly black girls from immigrant backgrounds.
Currently, she oversees digital communications for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.
In addition to her work with these organisations, Syra has spearheaded several initiatives, including Dakar 3×3 Hoops, Women Empowering Girls, and the Each One Teach One educational programme, as well as recruiting and training young, disadvantaged girls through Dakar Hoops. – wires
