In the heart of Zimbabwe, a remarkable story of determination and success unfolds.
Thandiwe Makhena, a recent graduate from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), has captured the attention of many with her exceptional academic achievements.
Scoring five distinctions in her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree, Thandiwe not only graduated with honours but also emerged as the best graduating student of her class, earning a total of 12 prestigious awards.
As she stood on the graduation stage, capped by President Mnangagwa, Thandiwe felt a wave of pride and gratitude wash over her.
“It was a surreal moment,” she recalls, reflecting on the recognition she received for her hard work and dedication.
The awards she earned included the Vice Chancellor’s prize, the Dean’s prize, and various floating trophies for excellence in specialised fields such as Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology.
Each accolade symbolised her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her commitment to the medical profession.
Thandiwe’s journey began in Kwekwe, where she was born and raised.
Her roots trace back to Maboleni in Lower Gwelo, a rural area where she attended Fitchlea Primary School and later Rio Tinto Zhombe High School.
From a young age, Thandiwe nurtured a dream of becoming a doctor, inspired by the care and compassion she witnessed from medical professionals who treated her friends and family.
“God truly answers our prayers,” she reflects, acknowledging the divine guidance she felt throughout her educational journey.
Her path, however, was not without challenges.
Long hours of studying, emotional exhaustion, and the sacrifices of a social life tested her resolve.
Yet, it was through these obstacles that Thandiwe found resilience and determination.
“With each challenge, I grew more committed to my goal,” she shares, attributing her success to the support of her compassionate tutors, classmates, and a loving family.
As she celebrates her achievements, Thandiwe remains grounded.
“My parents are over the moon,” she says, highlighting the joy her success brings to her family.
With her sights set on the future, she hopes to specialise in neurosurgery, driven by a desire to make a difference in the medical field.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Thandiwe emphasises the importance of empathy and understanding in healthcare.
“Working with patients has been one of the most rewarding experiences,” she notes, recognising the profound impact that kindness can have on a person’s wellbeing.
As she steps into her role at Mpilo Central Hospital, she is committed to advocating for health education, believing that knowledge is power.
To those currently pursuing their studies, Thandiwe offers an empowering message: “You can achieve anything you want; the sky is the limit. Stay curious and remember why you started this journey.”
Her story is not just one of individual success; it is a testament to the power of perseverance, compassion, and the desire to uplift others.
As Thandiwe Makhena embarks on her professional journey, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of many, ready to inspire a ripple effect of kindness and compassion in the world of medicine.
