A potpourri of hope, expectation & anxiety

The crossover into 2022 was distinctly different from traditional celebrations, as the 9pm-6am curfew meant night events were banned.

However, Zimbabweans, just like the rest of the world, celebrated the new season nevertheless and embraced 2022 full of hope and expectation. Anxieties over the coronavirus pandemic still continue. The Sunday Mail’s Tanyaradzwa Rusike spoke with some of them to find out their plans for the new year.

Tatenda Mavetera (ZANU PF Seke-Chikomba women’s quota MP):

I think 2022 is supposed to be an eventful year and I am hoping for the best.
We are hoping for a lot of opportunities for women in Zimbabwe; for women to occupy decision-making positions, which means they will be represented and get involved in all facets of the economy.

I crossed over into the New Year through prayer. I prayed to God to help me in 2022.
It’s unfortunate that because of Covid-19 we are not having church gatherings because in previous years, I would get into the New Year while at church.

Dominic Satumba: I began this year by attending the New Year’s Eve mass at our church to thank the Lord for His grace throughout a difficult 2021. It was a difficult year economically and socially, especially with the Covid-19 pandemic affecting and disrupting our ‘normal’ way of life.

It’s worth giving thanks to God for that, and to ask for more spiritual protection in 2022. Like everyone else, I have high hopes for 2022, believing that each year, like each day, has something new in store for everyone. Personally, I do hope for better fortunes in all facets of life, work, family and education.

Tapiwa Dzangare (Actress): I am hoping that in 2022 God will release us from the Covid-19 virus, because most businesses are struggling. I pray that 2022 will be brighter for everyone in terms of business and health.

Ruvimbo Issa (University of Zimbabwe student): I believe a goal is a dream with a deadline; therefore, in 2022 I aim to finish my studies and graduate with a commendable degree class.

A few years back, I was selected as a Seed for the Future and I believe 2022 is the time for the seed to germinate into a beautiful flower. Therefore, it is my hope and aim that I will contribute immensely to the advancement of Zimbabwe’s technology.

Dr Alban Gambe (Academic): Having successfully completed my PhD in 2021, the sky is the limit in 2022. Being a holder of a PhD does not mean that I will rest on my laurels and boast about the qualification, no.

I will continue to learn and put into practise my academic knowledge by interpreting it in everyday life. I also pray for the Covid-19 pandemic to subside so that we can return to the “old normal”.

Gift Fungisai Madziwa (Founder of Creative Genius Club): Without doubt, 2021 was a long year full of ups and downs, particularly in business. I would like to advise young entrepreneurs to stand guided by the Bible, which says in Thessalonians says: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

My hope in 2022 is to see young people prosper despite where they come from because they have the right to develop their talents and achieve their dreams.

Eddie “Mboma” Nyatanga (Businessman and Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association president): I am in Zanzibar spending time with my wife, Dr Angie Nyatanga, and family. We are here in Zanzibar enjoying our holiday.

We passed through Cape Town where my wife was awarded a doctorate. I want to congratulate her for her perseverance and philanthropy. She is the pride of our family.

Dr Faith Nyamukapa (CEO of KinderCare Zimbabwe and Imani Foundation Ambassador): 2021 has been a year of mixed fortunes yet through God’s grace we managed to sail through. I look forward to a year that has God showing Himself through me as I live my life according to His plans. I look forward to embrace new challenging opportunities and to serve God more.

Tariro Chirewa (CEO of House of Moringa): As the CEO of House of Moringa, an ethical health and wellness brand, my hope for 2022 is to expand my business and enter the export market with our proudly Zimbabwean brand. For me, crossing over into the new year has to be done with the Creator leading your path into 2022.
