CAPS United skipper, Tonderai Mateyaunga, has hailed a rare gesture which was shown by the club’s fans after they picked a priceless opoint in a 0-0 stalemate against Chicken Inn in Bulawayo on Sunday.
The players were given refreshments by delirious fans from the Bulawayo, Kadoma and Gweru supporters chapters.
The euphoric fans went out of their way to cheer up their players, who extended their unbeaten run to six games.
The reality is that only a few people had expected the Green Machine to have such an impressive start.
Mateyaunga was the fans’ man-of-the-match after keeping a clean sheet and he received US$50 from the Bulawayo Supporters Chapter.
He has conceded just once in six games.
The Gweru and Kadoma Supporters Chapters weighed in with match refreshments.
“On behalf of the team, I want to thank our supporters for showing us what we never expected,” said Mateyaunga.
“We really felt their love and our wish was to pay their efforts with a victim but it just wasn’t our day. “It was a remarkable welcome and they were with us since our arrival until we left Bulawayo.”
He added:
“We are very grateful for your support and it has given us every reason to push to the limits in our quest to win the championship.
“Everyone was really motivated and I want to urge our fans to keep on supporting us because we are nothing without their support.”
Makepekepe are in charge of the Castle Lager Premiership marathon with 11 points.
A tough test awaits them this weekend when they face struggling Dynamos in the Harare Derby at the National Sports Stadium.
The Green Machine struggled badly last season, choked by financial challenges, and were barely recognisable as one of the country’s Big Three football clubs.
However, they have turned that around, thanks to the improved financial position, which the club find themselves in today, with the players finally playing to expectations.
