Amidu arrived in South Africa at the weekend to begin a 10-day trial at the Urban Warriors where he is hoping to impress and possibly join his former Aces Youth Academy teammate Khama Billiat and fellow Zimbabwean Tafadzwa Rusike.
Billiat, who is now recognised as the Ajax Cape Town talisman, and Rusike are now in their second season with the Premiership side.
But after starring for Mambas on the domestic scene and helping the modest Zimbabwe Republic Police side to escape relegation, Amidu has set his sights on a professional career and is hoping that the Urban Warriors could be the stepping stone to that dream.
Amidu’s manager Edzai Kasinuayo, of Tamba Sport International, said from South Africa yesterday that he was optimistic that the midfielder would pass the Ajax test and eventually secure a deal.
“They (Ajax Cape Town) are assessing him and trying to establish if he can fit into their system.
“Abbas has been playing Premiership football back home but Ajax want to assess him from within their own environment.
“Whether he will make it or not I cannot tell at the moment but what I know is that we have limited resources at home to expose our talented youngsters to the professional atmosphere they get at clubs in the South African Premiership.
“Even if he makes it or not I ‘m sure he will leave Ajax Cape Town empowered and encouraged that he can do it at the professional level.
“I am sure he will obviously draw a lot of inspiration from training with some youngsters of his age who are at Ajax but I really believe that he has the qualities.
“The fact that he has come through an academy set up will also stand him in good stead because some of the disadvantages that some of our players face is that they would have developed late and might be missing one or two key things in terms of technique.
“And, if they are a bit older, it becomes difficult to try and change them without affecting their game or confusing them.
“This why we should try and have as many of young payers as possible going through the academy system,” Kasinauyo said.
Should he make the grade, Amidu will also become the latest talent to be plucked from Nigel Munyati and Marc Duvillard’s Aces Youth Academy that has also produced Warriors’ talisman Knowledge
Musona, who is now playing in Germany, and Kaizer Chiefs’ upcoming defender Lincoln Zvasiya.
During his stint at Ajax Cape Town, Amidu will, according to the club’s website, also join 13 other trialists from around the continent who have been invited by the Urban Warriors.
Ten South African players were joined by four foreigners to undergo training sessions under the watchful eye of the Ajax Cape Town technical team.
“This is not an open trial, these players were invited.
“The foreigners come from as far afield as Ghana, Benin and Mozambique while the remaining players are locals who were recommended to the club,” said George Comitis the Ajax CEO.
The players will train at Ikamva for the next week with their final session next Monday.
