A Harare medical doctor and four family members last Tuesday appeared in court charged with unlawful termination of a pregnancy after they allegedly forced their relative, who claimed to have been impregnated by her uncle, to terminate the pregnancy. Dickson Chindova, Trust Gavi, Elizabeth Mahachi, Kebson Gavi and Goodboy Gavi appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa facing unlawful termination of pregnancy charges.
The prosecutor, Ms Constance Ngombengombe, alleged that on unknown dates in July, Goodboy was informed by Liliosa Gavi’s employer that Liliosa was claiming that she was impregnated by a relative.
The court heard that Goodboy convened a family meeting to discuss the issue.
The four agreed that Liliosa’s pregnancy was an abomination and had to be terminated, but Liliosa did not consent to this.
It is alleged that on August 3, Trust and Elizabeth took Liliosa to a doctor Chindova in Rugare suburb where a pill was inserted in her womanhood.
After the procedure, the three drove to Lake Chivero where they spent the night waiting for the pill to take effect.
However, nothing happened.
On the morrow, they drove back to Chindova who injected Liliosa on the arm with an unknown drug.
The court heard that the family drove back to Lake Chivero and waited for the injection to take effect.
It is alleged that around 4pm Liliosa delivered a still born foetus and Elizabeth wrapped it in a blanket and put it in a sack.
As they were driving back to Rugare, they allegedly stopped at a bridge and dumped the body.
Liliosa was taken to Rugare where she was held for three days before being taken to Mutare by Elizabeth. She was taken to Kebson’s house where they allegedly hid her to avoid questions concerning her pregnancy.
However, Liliosa informed her aunt who tipped off the police, leading to the opening of the report.
