EcoCash Holdings is a ZSE-listed entity that was demerged from Econet on November 8, 2018, and listed as a standalone entity.
The new company, initially named Cassava Smartech, was renamed EcoCash Holdings in 2021.
As it stands, EcoCash Holdings owns Steward Bank Limited, which was launched in July 2013 following Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s acquisition of TN Bank, a subsidiary of TN Holdings Limited (now known as Lifestyle Holdings).
Following its launch, the Bank has since positioned itself as a mass-bank, focused on providing banking solutions through the use of technology.
Tawanda Nyambirai is the current Chief Executive Officer of EcoCash Holdings.
After completing his law degree (LLB) at the University of Zimbabwe in 1992, he began his professional journey as a partner at Kantor & Immerman until 1998.
During this period, he achieved remarkable success, becoming a millionaire in his 20s.
Nyambirai’s expertise in corporate finance was evident in his role as General Manager of Corporate Finance at NMB Bank from 2000 to 2001.
He was also instrumental in Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s initial public offering (IPO) on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) in 1998.
In 2001, he founded TN Asset Management, which was later listed on the ZSE as TN Holdings Limited in 2009.
In addition to his business pursuits, Nyambirai co-founded Mtetwa and Nyambirai Legal Practitioners with renowned lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa in 2006.
His entrepreneurial spirit and strategic decision-making have led to several notable transactions, including the sale of a 45% stake in TN Bank to Econet for $20 million in 2013 and the acquisition of Arcturus Mine from Metallon Corporation in 2017.
More recently, he reacquired TN Bank (now Steward Bank) from Econet in 2025.
