Acting President Chiwenga hails Coventry’s IOC victory as national pride

ACTING President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has congratulated Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry for being elected as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), saying her election was not a personal triumph but a moment of immense pride for the country.

Minister Coventry was voted president of the IOC on Thursday to replace Thomas Bach.

In a statement, Acting President Chiwenga said her journey from a talented swimmer to becoming the first woman and first African elected president of the IOC exemplifies the spirit of determination and excellence that our country embodies.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your remarkable election as president of the International Olympic Committee (I0C). This is not just a personal triumph; it is also a moment of immense pride for our country.

“Your journey from a talented swimmer to becoming the first woman and first African to be elected president of the International Olympic Committee exemplifies the spirit of determination and excellence that our country stands for,” said the Acting President.

Dr Chiwenga said her illustrious career as an Olympian, marked by dedication and unparalleled achievements, has inspired countless Zimbabweans and athletes around the world.

“It was this very legacy of success that made it an easy decision for our President His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa to appoint you as Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

“Your extensive experience and profound knowledge of the sporting world have made significant impact on our national sports agenda and your new role at the International Olympic Committee is testament to your capabilities and vision.

“As you step into this influential position, I urge you to continue to represent our values and aspirations on the global stage.

“The role of International Olympic Committee president carries with it immense responsibilities and I have every confidence that you will advocate for the growth and development of sports worldwide, fostering inclusivity and excellence in every discipline,” he said.

Dr Chiwenga said she should be assured that the Government of Zimbabwe stands firmly behind her as she embarks on this important journey, adding that the Government also looks forward to seeing the positive changes she will bring to the global sports community.
