Action Zone wins Castle Tankard, Zimpapers Sports Hub
FIVE-YEAR-OLD gelding Action Zone won the 65th edition of the Castle Tankard, galloping to victory ahead of Jaeger Moon in the 2 000-metre race before a colourful and appreciative crowd at Borrowdale Race Course in Harare yesterday.
Action Zone, who was ridden by Monty Thackeray, outfought a strong field that featured a number of seasoned horses and ultimately came through first on the finish line, with Jaeger Moon, who had Deryl Daniels on the saddle, in hot pursuit.
Master Tik Tok and My Secret Place finished third and fourth, respectively.
Victory left Action Zone’s owner Craig Danckwerts a thrilled man.
“It’s a dream come true. We have been involved in racing for a very long time and this is what we wanted,” said Danckwerts. I am very proud of the whole team that made this happen, all the grooms, Thomas (Mason) and everyone else who puts things together.
“A special thanks also goes to Delta Beverages; they have been absolute rock-solid sponsors of this race over the years.”
Delta Beverages marketing director, Irimayi Muzorewa reiterated his company’s commitment to promoting local horse racing and sports.
“When the first Castle Tankard was run in 1960, few could have imagined the great legacy it would create. Sixty-five years later, it remains the oldest sponsored horse race in Africa, hence our theme this year, ‘the legacy continues,” said Muzorewa.
“This race is testament to the deep-rooted commitment, excellence, consistency and shared passion by the Mashonaland Turf Club, the horse racing community and Delta as their partners. We thrive on the tangible impact that sport has at a global, local and individual level,” added Muzorewa.
