THE Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) will build solar power plants at airports across the country as part of efforts to enhance energy sustainability and reduce reliance on the national grid.

Zimbabwe’s largest airport, Robert Mugabe International Airport, will have a 5 megawatt plant, while a 2-megawatt solar farm will be constructed at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo.

Another major airport, Victoria Falls International Airport, will also have a 2MW solar farm.

Excess electricity generated from the solar facilities will be fed into the national grid, contributing to the country’s electrification drive.

The plans are being evaluated for implementation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

This dovetails with the Government’s thrust to adopt renewable energy solutions in response to growing electricity demand driven by economic expansion under the Second Republic.

ACZ public relations and communications manager Mr Tonderai Mangombe told Zimpapers Business Hub that the solar initiative would enable the airports to transition to clean energy while generating additional revenue.
