WOMEN Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Deputy Minister, Jennifer Mhlanga, says Women’s Month is important to address gender imbalances and various challenges faced by women in the country.
In a joint statement with UN Women, on the update of the International Women’s Day commemorations, she said Zimbabwe will join the rest of the world to commemorate the day tomorrow.
“March 8 is a day set aside in Zimbabwe to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women and girls, their courage and significant determination in contributing to the country’s growth.
“It is a day to reflect on the progress made in the advancement of women’s issues, revisit our social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality.
“We need to develop innovative ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure,” she said.
UN Women Country Representative, Fatou Lo, said this year’s International Women’s Day’s theme is ‘‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’’.
“This theme calls for our attention to an imbalance long overlooked, to address the gender gaps in technology and innovation, transform deep-rooted social norms and empower women and girls.
“Only one in three positions in the technology sector are occupied by women.
“The inclusion of women and girls in the digital world could potentially prevent a loss of US$1.5 trillion by 2025 in low-and middle-income countries.
“In 2022, there were 259 million more men than women using the Internet.”
