ENVIRONMENT, Climate and Wildlife Minister, Mangaliso Ndlovu, has urged communities to adopt better waste management practices to help the country reach its zero waste targets.
Speaking at the Zero Waste Movement campaign at the Africa Unity Square yesterday, Minister Ndlovu said appropriate waste management would include street cleaning, preventing illegal dumping, reducing waste generation and providing waste receptacles where needed.
He said:
“As we forge ahead with the sustainable waste management agenda, we will preach the zero waste gospel to all citizens leaving no one and no place behind.
“All Government Ministries, departments and agencies should continuously commit resources to push the Zero Waste Movement campaign drive,” said Minister Ndlovu.
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Charles Tavengwa, similarly emphasised the importance of sustainable waste solutions, suggesting plans for a recycling-led sustainable city project for the Harare region.
“When people collect waste, they must ensure that they know how to separate it as this will assist in recycling initiatives being done in Harare.
“We now have companies in Graniteside where recycling is being done and products such as plastic chairs, plates and irrigation pipes are being manufactured, improving people’s livelihoods,” he said.
