African minister’s rejection of US bullying appropriate

In 1945, when the League of Nations was turned into the United Nations, people around the world thought this international body would be inclusive in decision making processes, but their thinking was proved wrong with time.

Since its formation, people have witnessed bullying of small states by the so-called super powers led by the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) bloc. This trend has gone on until today where the US always finds fault in developing nations, especially when it is targeting to loot resources from the targeted countries.

Zimbabwe has not been spared.

Since the past two decades, the country has been under economic sanctions imposed by the US and her allies after the Government embarked on the land reform that was meant to correct land imbalances created during the colonial era.

Former Zimbabwean President, the late Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe, always called for the United Nations to reform as he argued that the super powers were abusing the international body.

The late President always argued that small nations were incessantly bullied by countries like the US and UK, but the UN was doing nothing to protect those targeted for abuse.

Now it seems the late Cde Mugabe is turning in his grave.

This was witnessed by how South African International Relations Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor handled the visit to that country recently by Mr Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State.

Mr Blinken, who sought through one of the panel journalists to coerce South Africa and other African States to condemn Russia on its conflict with Ukraine, got more than what he bargained for.

Minister Pandor was clear that nations should handle each other equally without looking at political and economic power.

She was clear that there should be no way a country should tell another nation on how to interact with each other on international affairs.

Minister Pandor said that nations globally should treat each other equally without African ministers’ rejection of US bullying appropriate favour or bullying.

She was clear that developed nations were creating problems in Africa by sponsoring opposition groups in the name of funding democratic initiatives.

She also pointed out that many of the wars in Africa were caused by the developed nations such as the US.

Minister Pandor pointed out that developed nations sponsored opposition political parties to remove revolutionary parties thereby creating civil wars.

Africa needs people like Minister Pandor who has taken upon herself to perpetuate ideological legacies left by revolutionaries such as Cde Mugabe.

Actually, Mr Blinket’s visit to Africa unearthed the potential of how Africa can do in future.

We have been relying on historical individuals like Kwame Nkrumah, Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba and many more who chatted the way for African renaissance.

Now, recent developments that came out during Mr Blinken’s visit to Africa revealed otherwise.

In Rwanda, Mr Blinken did not enjoy his stay as he was bluntly told by the country`s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Vincent Biruta, that the US should mind her own business and not interfere with internal affairs of other countries.

Dr Biruta asked the US to respect Rwanda’s sovereignty, laws and its institutions. This was after Mr Blinken had raised issues of alleged human rights abuses in Rwanda.

Dr Biruta’ s brave response to Mr Blinken was enough to send a strong message to the US that it is not the world’s head boy.

Africa should always stand up and fight back any measure that the western world may want to impose on this continent. Africa should not forget that civil wars that have been taking place on the continent were sponsored by these so called democratic countries.

In Mozambique, they sponsored the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) which destabilised that country since the late 1970s to early 1990s.

The West wanted Renamo to lead that country as the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) had an incompatible ideology with theirs.

It was the same with what happened in Angola where the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) destabilised the country fighting to remove the People`s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) which also had discordant ideology to the West’s.

So, Africa should use that history as a means to thwart any moves by the western countries to impose their will on African countries.

Dr Pandor and Dr Biruta have set the ball rolling, hence Africa needs to keep on thwarting any move meant to destabilise the continent.
