African Tribe ready to 12 -year break jinx

AFRICAN Tribe, a Bulawayo afro pop band, is determined to break a 12-year jinx that has seen the city failing to clinch first prize at the Chibuku Road to Fame national finals.

The last time a group from Bulawayo — Black Face — won the Chibuku Road to Fame national finals was in 2006, something African Tribe are hoping to change.

Last Saturday, the group earned a slot to represent Bulawayo at the national finals for the second year running after having missed the top prize by a whisker as they came second last year.

Led by Sharon Nyambuya and Fiola Malamba-Ncube, the group lost out to afro-fusion group, The Travellers, from the Midlands province.

This year, according to Nyambuya, is a do or die for them as it will be the last time they will enter the competition.

“We want to break the curse that Bulawayo has in the competition as the last time the city won was in 2006. We want to win the competition and bow out in style,” Nyambuya said.

She said they had noted their mistakes from last year’s competition and corrected them.

“During the preparation for the provincial competition, we polished up the mistakes we made last year. We’ve been there before and we know a bit to edge it at the national finals.”

She said rehearsals for the national finals taking place at Glamis Stadium in Harare on September 29 are going on well.
