Acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, has commended Africa’s founding fathers for fighting for the continent’s independence, creating the basis for economic emancipation.
Prof Murwira said this at belated Africa Day celebrations held on Friday.
The continent celebrated the 59th Africa Day anniversary on Wednesday.
“We look back in admiration of our founding fathers for their selflessness in creating the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 as a vehicle to champion our political independence which served as a strong foundation to building our economic freedom,” said Prof Murwira.
“We thank them for laying the foundation for us to regaining confidence in our food systems, our health systems, confidence not to be shy of who we are, confidence to defy humiliation.
“Africa remain steadfast to the preservation of the organisation ideals and objectives promoting unity solidarity and economic progress under the banner of the African Union successor to the OAU.”
Prof Murwira said it was incumbent on African leaders and the continent’s citizens to coordinate and intensify efforts to foster development to achieve the aspirations of the “Africa we Want”, as embodied and envisioned by the AU agenda 2063.
Speaking at the same occasion, acting Dean of African diplomats and Rwanda Ambassador to Zimbabwe James Musoni said Africa was blessed with natural resources to spur its development.
“Africa has so much potential,” he said.
“It has both the human and natural resources to secure a brighter future through contribution to the realisation of the ‘Africa we want’ as per African Union’s vision of Agenda 2063.”
The event was attended by African diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe.
Guests were served with traditional dishes from across the continent.
