If the Mujurus empire is as vast as the media are reporting – some say worth billions of US dollars – this could mean for the past three years Dr Joice Mujuru was among Africa’s richest people, and probably the wealthiest woman on the continent. What is of particular interest is how that

empire was built.
Below is a list of Africa’s richest people, according to Forbes magazine, and how they made their wealth.

Aliko Dangote (Nigeria) – US$21,6 billion: Cement, sugar and flour and commodity trading

Johann Rupert (South African) – US$7,3 billion: Luxury goods broking

Nicky Oppenheimer (South Africa) – US$6,8 billion: Mining

Nassef Sawiris (Egypt) – US$6,1 billion: Construction

Christoffel Wiese (South Africa) – US$5,4 billion: Retailing

Mike Adenuga (Nigeria) – US$4,6 billion: Telecommunications and oil

Mahomed Mansour (Egypt) – US$4 billion: Diversified holdings

Isabel dos Santos (Angola) – US$3,7 billion: Diversified investments

Issad Rebrab (Algeria) – US$3,2 billion: Food production

Naguib Sawiris (Egypt) – US$3,1 billion: Telecommunications
