SALT LAKE CITY. — This city and the Utah Jazz wanted to show the world they are an inclusive city, after reports in the past indicating otherwise.
The NBA had a special half-time show, at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, at the Vivint Arena, featuring an all Nigerian line-up with afrobeats superstars Burna Boy, Tems and Rema.
The show was a lengthy celebration of African music, headlined entirely by the country of Nigeria.
The catchy songs had most of the NBA All-Stars avoid the locker room at half-time and stay courtside to watch and record the artists.
Burna Boy was the first to take the stage as the headliner, playing his new hit Common Person.
He then made way for Rema, who played his smash hit Calm Down for the arena and viewers at home to enjoy.
Tems then entered the stage gracefully to perform her songs, including her smash hit Free Mind. Tems is fresh off her 2023 Grammys win – her first — for Best Melodic Rap Performance with her Future and Drake collaboration “Wait for U.”
She’s nominated for the 2023 Oscar for Best Original Song for her work on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” from the soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Burna Boy’s last LP Love, Damini dropped that summer.
Before tip-off at the All-Star Game, Post Malone performed his songs “Wow.” and “Rockstar” for a crowd of fans.
For the latter song, he brought out 21 Savage, who appears on the original studio version of that track.
Rema appeared on FKA twigs’ Caprisongs track “Jealousy” in January 2022; he shared his debut album, Rave & Roses, in April.
He just released a couple of new songs, too: “Holiday” and “Reason You.”
Toronto Raptors All-Star Pascal Siakam could be seen dancing to the new-age African melodies. The power forward never even made it to the locker room for halftime. — marca.
