adminCentral Air Transport Services (CATS) managing director Captain Oscar Madombwe said business volumes in the sector in 2011 were higher than in 2010.
“Flights in 2011 increased to between 20 and 25 flights per month, up from 10 in 2010 depending on the period,” he said.
“In 2010, things were just bad. We moved very low volumes of passengers.”
Capt Madombwe said most flights were to the traditional tourist destinations.
“We have been moving people to Victoria Falls, Kariba and between cities, especially Bulawayo and Harare,” he said.
Capt Madombwe said in addition to increased tourist arrivals, inefficiencies at Air Zimbabwe had contributed to the sector’s growth.
He also attributed the growth to the country’s economic recovery.
“The performance of the economy always has an impact on the aviation sector. The recovery of the economy has resulted in increased demand for aviation services,” he said.
Chartering a plane from Harare to Bulawayo costs between $1 800 and $2 500, while the cost for Harare and Victoria Falls range between $3 000 and $3 500. — New Ziana.
